Congress moves toward adjournment as the $1.2 billion demonstration cities bill nears final passage while the proposed 8 to 10 percent Social Security benefits increase for January 1 is dropped. The session aims to finish by Thursday or Saturday.
The Senate advanced a compromise demonstration office bill and a $1.75 billion war on poverty package as Congress nears adjournment. President Johnson priorities include urban renewal, education aid, anti inflation tax measures, and labor-welfare funds. House action expected soon with November elections in view.
The board approved plans for a $4.5 million Business Administration building and a $3.8 million central heating and cooling plant at Texas Tech. They preserved the Livestock Judging Pavilion as a memorial, created adjoint and consulting professor roles, and planned a fountain for Amon G. Carter Plaza. Timothy Evans was hanged for killing his infant daughter Geraldine but a government inquiry and Queen Elizabeth II granted a posthumous pardon. Home Secretary Jenkins announced the signing as Parliament reopened, saying Evans probably did not commit the murder though he may have killed his wife.
Six Black youths were charged Tuesday in Bay City Texas after a 20 year old white girl reported an incident in a park Friday night. The youths were accused of involvement in the reported attack prompting the charges.
A multi million dollar contract was awarded to Manhattan Construction Co for a 5 685 170 dollar 15 story office building with parking garage power plant and drive in bank in downtown Lubbock between Avenues N and O on Broadway. Ground breaking is scheduled Friday at 4 p m with completion in 550 to 700 days under good conditions.
A survey from Tech's marketing department estimates total college expenditures at 47 million dollars annually with students spending 48 million on books and related supplies. Prices for textbooks run about 9 to 10 dollars per course, while on campus costs include housing and clothing.
