Four Michigan inmates at Southern Michigan State Prison held four hostages for six hours in a barricaded hospital room before surrendering after officials promised to consider their grievances. Elsewhere in Baltimore a sit down strike in prison workshops ended after about 500 inmates participated. No injuries were reported.
President Johnson, in evident effort, takes a half hour stroll at Bethesda Naval Hospital as aides predict a longer recovery. Moyers notes continued abdominal pain and wait time, while Johnson links antiwar protests to concerns of Communist miscalculation. Mrs Johnson stands nearby as Newsmen catch up. Johnson says he feels pretty good. In a separate note, OAU foreign ministers urge Britain to use force to prevent Rhodesia’s independence.
In Lubbock the A J reports a large turnout for the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra opening concert. Other items note Texas Tech scholarships, a scrawled message from trapped minors, and national and world news highlights across sections. An Alabama circuit judge ruled the federal Voting Rights Act of 1965 unconstitutional. Circuit Judge James Hare granted an injunction sought by Alabama Governor George C. Wallace, blocking federal voting examiners from certifying voter lists in seven counties and limiting federal oversight based on state equality principles.
Severe rainfall across Texas shuts farm roads and disrupts power and phone lines. A tornado near Mission causes minor damage while rivers surge through Rotan and Snyder area towns. Emergency crews rescue a resident as runoff floods streets and businesses amid a statewide moisture spike.

An armored guard at Sears in Oakland was robbed of 35000 by a tall gunman who, aided by two associates, fled after confronting Paul H. Bachelor 46 of Hayward on the store’s second floor. Bachelor was shot in the shoulder and handcuffed to a stair railing before the suspects escaped.
Cuban refugees cross the Florida Straits in small boats, with 168 arrivals in 24 hours. A 16-day-old infant, Juan Gerardo Hernandez, was among those reaching Marathon aboard El Terrible, cradled by his mother Melba, as father Gerardo Hernandez seeks a free life for his son. Coast Guard reports two boats foundered over the weekend amid the perilous crossing.
President Johnson and other officials warned that antiwar and antidraft protests risk undermining U.S. Viet Nam policy. Senators criticized draft card burnings as treasonous, while the FBI arrested a demonstrator under a new law. The White House backed a probe into Communist involvement as plans for a Washington march emerged.
Nigel Harwood 19 a Nottingham University student fooled judges and contestants when he posed as a female contestant named Anna Matdles in the annual varsity queen contest. He revealed the ruse after winning second prize, laughing at the surprised audience and officials.
Mary Ann Reese reports the author of a draft dodging leaflet distributed at anti-Vietnam protests in Berkeley says the strong official backlash shows a lack of humor. The pamphlet, by Sidney Cherpiel, suggests mock methods to evade the draft and drew charges of treasonous conduct from some sources. Cherpiel defends it as satire unrelated to aiding the army, noting his own 4-F status after picketing the Oakland induction center.
