President Johnson dismissed a unilateral bombing pause in Vietnam and urged reciprocity if the enemy pauses. He announced a U S trip to the Pacific starting Monday and a Manila conference October 23 27 to seek peace, after a long talk with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko.
Grain sorghum harvesting across northern South Plains gains pace as unofficial estimates project area production to exceed last year’s 130 million bushels. Charles W. Lambert of Abernathy distributes milo from a large combine, highlighting sorghum as a key local cash crop.
The 1966 grain sorghum crop is moving into country and terminal elevators in heavy volume. Industry observers estimate a total nationwide output exceeding last year’s 150 million bushels from 28 counties, with about 65 percent harvest completion. The High Plains area leads U.S. production and faces growing export and livestock feeding demand.
A string of chemical plant explosions near Monsanto in Montreal late Thursday night ignited a blaze that engulfed more than twenty buildings. A slender young man found at Houston International Airport claimed amnesia and identified as Terrance D. Remature from Laubock Texas Tech. He was in hazy condition at police HQ and later pointed to Gadsden High School in Anthony New Mexico. Investigators found no matching records with New Mexico or Lubbock authorities.
