Four Die, Twelve Hurt In Pennsylvania Turnpike Crash
A Greyhound bus rear ended a flatbed trailer truck eight miles west of Somerset on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. 31 Day Area Traffic Death Holiday Ends
96 year old West Texan Joseph Franklin Smith of East 19th Street was killed instantly when struck by a truck in the 1900 block on East Broadway at 7 15 p m Saturday ending a record 31 day period with no traffic deaths in the South Plains area. He had told the Parks Restaurant cashier he could cross alone and was struck as he started back to the cafe after likely forgetting something. Smith was living with his son the evangelist Rev Harry Smith and with his grandson L D Smith today. The driver was Oliver H Willis 21 Route 7. Smith died at McDonald Memorial Hospital. The accident was the fourth fatality of the year within Lubbock city limits and pushed area toll to 77. The last fatality was Sept 3 in Slaton. Thelma Weems, cashier at the Parks, gave the account of the events.

Two Killed Five Hurt In Big Spring Wreck
Two people died and five were injured in a head on collision about ten miles west of Big Spring. The deceased are William Shows twenty, of Waynesboro Mississippi and Mrs Lee Jones of Midland a Black woman. J B Davis a Fort Bliss soldier was among the injured. Others treated at Midland area hospitals include Walter Jones 45 and his wife 33 and Mrs Thelma Montgomery. Davis was taken to Webb Air Force Base Hospital. Both cars were demolished and traffic was blocked.
