World science coverage notes proposed sites for the world’s largest atom smasher to be inspected by the Atomic Energy Commission. Also items from Texas law on trial judges and a Mexico plane crash report anchor the day’s pages.
American infantrymen backed by planes artillery and armor killed an estimated 342 Viet Cong and wounded about 400 in a seven hour battle on the eastern fringes of the Iron Triangle 35 miles north of Saigon AIGON report. Casualties were light for the Americans though armor suffered heavy damage and eight APCs were destroyed. Viet Cong struck again near Plei Me damaging helicopters before being driven off. Guam based B52s bombed suspected concentrations and fighting along Highway 12 continued into dawn.
The South Plains Panhandle regional convention of the State Bar of Texas ends today with an 8 p.m. breakfast featuring Texas Attorney General Waggoner Carr and a 10 a.m. panel discussion by top Texas legal minds. More than 200 attorneys from 59 West Texas counties attended. the two-day event adjourns at noon.

UPI reports evangelist Billy Graham announced he has fully recovered from an operation and illness that caused two postponements of his Crusade for Christ in the Harris County Domed Stadium. Graham underwent prostate gland surgery on Sept. 8.
A string of northern Illinois and Indiana tornadoes destroyed homes and a wall at a shopping center. An elderly woman, 80, died and 58 others were injured as a wall collapsed near Channahon, Illinois. The power grid near Morris was crippled when a transmission tower fell, cutting electricity to thousands. Injuries and damage were reported at Silver Cross Joliet, St Joseph’s Joliet, St Margaret’s Hammond, and elsewhere.
The Air Force and Navy named eight astronauts for the MOL program to orbit in a shirt sleeve environment for up to 30 days. The crew includes Maj Michaels J Adams and Maj Albert H Crews plus Capt Richard F E Sawyer Lachlan MacLeay F Gregory Neubeck Capt James M Taylor and Lt John L Finley Lt Richard H Truly with training set at Edwards AFB for 1968 launch aboard a Titan 3 Gemini linked craft.
An afternoon quake measured at 3.7 by Charles Richter struck Los Angeles near downtown to the sea region causing swinging chandeliers and rattling dishes in the Merchandise Mart area. No damage was reported and adjacent counties did not feel the tremor. A separate seismograph in California logged a large Asian quake earlier, with uncertain origin between Japan and Formosa or Manchuria.
United Airlines Flight 227 from New York to San Francisco overshot a runway on landing in twilight, bounced, and skidded into a fiery crash. Airport officials reported a 300 to 400 foot shortfall, a crater in the asphalt, and survivors aiding others as flames erupted.
A Rocky Mountain cold front swept through the northern half of Texas clearing clouds and bringing the season's coldest temperatures. Freeze warnings were issued for the Panhandle and northern South Plains with Lubbock spared a freeze though temps from 35 to 40 expected to dawn, warming to 65 by afternoon. Frost will aid cotton defoliation and harvesting after a delayed season due to Indian summer and wet weather.
Three U S Air Force airmen survived an early collision only to die when a second crash occurred as a passenger jet burned on landing in Salt Lake City The sole survivor Lt John J Sullivan 24 escaped with severe burns from the Globemaster crew’s six The three killed were Sgt Robert Leo Burns 37 Sgt Fred L Hart 35 and Sgt German Edwin Caline 34 all from the 28th Air Transport Squadron at Hill Air Force Base Utah
Former world champion rodeo cowboy Bill Linderman is listed among casualties in a Salt Lake City plane crash. Linderman had appeared in ABC Boys Club rodeos in Lubbock and is named in a story by AP Wirephoto.
Gov. Albertis S. Harrison Jr. appointed Harry Byrd Jr. to the U S Senate following the retirement of his father. Byrd Jr. 50, a state senator and newspaper executive, will serve until the next regular election in November 1966, with a possible bid for the remaining term.
Ambassador Goldberg announced at the United Nations Security Council that the United States and Britain will impose economic and diplomatic penalties to end Rhodesia's independence bid. Measures include farm shipments embargo, sugar quota withholding, loan suspensions, and travel discouragement, plus closing US Information Agency centers in Salisbury.
A Santa Fe passenger train plowed into a pickup at a railroad crossing near Pampa killing 74 year old Walter M Voyles. Voyles was hurled about 95 yards and wreckage spread over a 100 yard area. He had lived in Pampa since 1927 and was a retired superintendent of the Tulsa Rig and Reel Co. Texas traffic deaths rose to 2,366 by noon Friday, down from 2,439 last year.
