Rhodesia's white minority government unilaterally proclaimed independence prompting swift British denunciation and UN censure. The 117 nation General Assembly condemned the move, urged Britain to quell the rebellion, and warned of possible action if diplomacy fails. Kenneth Kaunda warned of force if Rhodesia provokes.
A slow warming trend persisted across the Plains as drizzling rain, fog and thunderstorms moved through most areas. Gusty winds stirred dust in West Texas while many locations reported scant rainfall with no significant moisture by midnight.

A Boeing 727 carrying 89 aboard burst into flames on landing at Salt Lake Municipal Airport. Authorities said 41 were presumed dead with 48 of the United Airlines crew and passengers accounted for, leaving 41 missing. Early reports showed 44 survivors, later revised.
Oath Bend Indiana Celene Jankowski 24 a young mother attempted self immolation in front of her home after reporting Viet Nam trauma. Neighbor Henry Woaniak smothered the flames with a blanket as she suffered third degree burns and was expected to survive. Her husband Richard said she had spoken of burning themselves to death amid family losses including their infant who died last October and a brother killed in Korea.
Cincinnati AP CAB said Thursday a conversation with Capt Elmer Weekly a survivor of Monday night Boeing T27 jet crash has been very helpful in determining the disaster's cause. Officials withheld details and noted three other survivors remain un interviewed. Weekly is an American Airlines employee who was aboard as a passenger and is in fair condition.
