Nixon and Humphrey meet in Miami for unity talks amid transition planning. They discuss foreign policy and national security with Muskie present. Shrine events in Wichita Temple begin with a parade and ceremonial sessions as part of a busy Lubbock weekend.
A surprise snow event blanketed Texas with up to six inches in spots while rainfall turned to snow across the Panhandle and South Plains. Four people died as slick roads caused numerous accidents. Lubbock and Brown County reported notable accumulations. Forecasters warned of lingering drifts as a large system moved east.

Reported by the Avalanched Journal Staff a Friday about 250 petitions filed by Citizens for economic Development in Precinct 6 were turned into the county clerk. Only 3,0480 signatures were necessary to call an election before closing time. The effort brings a local option liquor election nearer for residents of Lubbock's Precinct 6.
Five young Red Army occupation soldiers defected to Sweden amid protests against the Soviet invasion. Police sources say asylum is expected on humanitarian grounds. The report notes Sweden has granted sanctuary to others and mentions related local petition activity on liquor sales and voter signatures.
