Labor and management discussed whether existing contracts will be honored and if raises denied by the wage freeze should be paid retroactively. Mars Probes From US and USSR Readying for Red Planet Rendezvous

Three space probes, Mariner 9 from the United States and Mars 2 and 3 from the Soviet Union, near Mars in a race to detect signs of life. Woman Killed In Area Crash Near Silverton

SILVERTON Special One person died four miles west of Silverton at Texas 36 and FM 207 in a two car crash Saturday around 11 am. Maud B. Martin 81 of Pampa died at the scene. John Martin 73 and Mary Lou Northcutt 37 of Silverton were critically injured and taken to hospitals in Tulsa and Amarillo.

About 750 students attended a Texas Tech conference on voter registration and election issues for 1972. Speakers included Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes former U S Senator Ralph Yarborough and State Rep Fred Agnich with a deputy registrar panel representing Dolph Briscoe. Russell Mardin oversaw the mass swearing in for 128 Lubbock County deputy registrars among the youths.

City faces emergency fund drain from 1970 tornado

Pentagon chief says U S combat role to persist in Vietnam

Defense Secretary Melvin Laird stated the United States will maintain its combat role in Vietnam as long as American support troops remain in the country. He cited concern over the Vietnamese economy and rejected an early end to the 184000 military force by December 1, promising to meet Nixon’s deadline only if conditions allow. He spoke at a news conference in Saigon.
