He predicted Kennedy would lose every Southern state if reelected and defended the South’s stance on racial issues amid protests by placard bearing NAACP members in the rain.

Willis Newton 74 of Uvalde Texas was sentenced to 12 months in prison for kidnapping Low Brent of Tulsa Oklahoma. A jury found Newton guilty on October 19 after deputies found Brent chained in the trunk of Newton's car near Inola Oklahoma in 1962. Newton testified Brent stole jewelry from his ranch and he meant to frighten him into revealing its location. Newton's nephew Noel Oglesby faces kidnapping charges. Newton was previously convicted in a 1924 $2 million train robbery at Roundout Texas.
