Moon radar study begins at Arecibo Puerto Rico
The Arecibo Observatory near San Juan, Puerto Rico, with an 1000 foot steel dish and 550 ton roving eye, is to begin radar probing the moon to map surface and subsurface structure for lunar landing plans by 1970. Scientists say the system will also advance studies of Mercury Venus and Mars, improve orbital calculations, and help locate celestial objects with high precision. The project is funded by ARPA and linked to Project Defender highlighting early space defense research.

Two NYC Janitors Suspended and Demoted in Maintenance Probe
New York City officials say two custodians are suspended and two more demoted following an audit of city school maintenance. The board’s Frank Wadsworth would not identify the workers or reveal trial dates. The probe also led to warnings for ten custodians and questions over salaries, including D Paul Bishop who earned 53 thousand dollars last year from a 102 thousand dollar school total. The board aims to cap annual salaries at about 25 thousand dollars in future contracts.
