Pioneer businessman Smylie Wilson dies at 86
Smylie C. Wilson, 86, of 1615 transformation of a struggling 10th St. a pioneer Lubbock Plains, died at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Methodist Hospital after two weeks’ hospitalization. Services are pending at Sanders Funeral Home. A native of Divine, Wilson came to Lubbock in 1902 to run Stringfellow and Hume hardware. He led Western Windmill after 1905 until retiring in 1957, guiding education, religion and economy in Lubbock. He helped organize a city band and joined the first volunteer fire department and Presbyterian Church, serving as clerk of session for over 50 years.
