Brownfield special edition reports Jim Rudd defeats E L Short for the District 77 Democratic nomination by a narrow margin. Campaign notes highlight voter shifts and key precinct results. Rudd presses forward as the party nominee seeking broader support.
After a May 1 primary and Friday recount, Rudd, a 33 year old Brownfield attorney, outpolled Short by 184 votes for the District 77 seat. Rudd will run unopposed in November, representing Andrews Gaines Lynn Martin Terry Yoakum and Hockley counties. Short expressed concern over West Texas seniority and spending checks and balances.
Morton residents charge Bob Travis with dereliction of duties and cover up of staff acts. After an hour ovation the Morton School Board heard evidence and accepted his resignation effective July 30. The panel also accused basketball coach Ted Whitlock of lax supervision and allowing alcohol on trips. The committee faulted inconsistent discipline policies across the district.

A group of about 20 senior citizens plans a 28 acre retirement center near Pine Hills Golf Course in West Lubbock. It will feature 100 individually owned homes with resale to the coop, a central dining facility, crafts rooms, a swimming pool and mini golf. Residents pay 1000 entry and 10 percent down payment, then 25 year amortization with profits returned to the association fund. The project is non profit and will require a residency screening committee.
Commencement speaker B J Randles urged 623 seniors at Monterey High School to pursue their fullest potential and responsibility as they receive diplomas in Lubbock. He linked youth awareness of world events and technology to future global problem solving, promising a brighter tricentennial.
Nineteen persons ranging from housewives to forklift operators graduated in the Lubbock Evening High commencement at Wilson Junior High Auditorium Friday night. Mona Kirk delivered the invocation and the Dunbar String Ensemble provided music directed by James Braxton. Jay Gordon, assistant superintendent, gave the address praising the class for valuing education and overcoming dropout challenges.

Ted R. Day former owner of Draughon's Commercial College of Lubbock and Draughon's Business College of Amarillo was sentenced to four years in prison and five years probation for embezzling 271000 from federal student aid programs. He pleaded guilty to six counts after a Dallas federal grand jury indictment.
