Wage Base Changes in Bill Face Farm Labor Debate
Debate focused on amendments to a wage bill including extending coverage to elementary and secondary school staff and limiting tipped workers in restaurants to 55 percent of the minimum wage. Rep Dave Martin urged excluding farm workers, citing financial strain on farmers. California officials argued otherwise. The bill proposes starting farm workers at $1 an hour with 15 cent annual raises to $1.30 by 1969, and other workers to $1.60 by 1971, with disputed steps on raising the current $1.25 rate. A related plan to raise to $1.40 next year was not decided. London report notes a Englishwoman seeks rights for women to become licensed horse trainers.
