Storms Rattle Midland Area and New Mexico Touchdown Tornadoes Reported
Severe thunderstorms whipped eastern New Mexico with at least four tornado reports and hail up to marble size. In the Midland Odessa area, two inches of rain fell in under an hour, flooding streets and stranding traffic while fires burned at two houses and a cotton warehouse in Pyote, Texas.

City Council approves police pay hike and cars
The Lubbock City Council increased police pay and approved air conditioned patrol cars to bolster the department toward its authorized strength of 194. Recruit starting pay rises to 412, patrolmen to 455 then 478, sergeants to 527 then 553, lieutenants to 553 then 581, captains to 581 then 610, and assistant chiefs to 707, with changes effective June 1 and October 1. Chief J T Alley warned the department remains undersized and recruitment is difficult.

More than 1000 seniors earned diplomas in four Lubbock ceremonies with awards and scholarships for scholastic achievement. Lubbock High graduation was at Municipal Coliseum at 8 pm, with Rep. George Mahon as the speaker. Lubbock Christian College hosted its 8 pm ceremony for a class of 98. Austin youths held for antiwar leaflets at Texas A&M campus
Five Austin youths were detained then released by campus police after distributing anti war literature on the Texas A&M campus. A sixth person evaded capture. Tech Receives 1.5 Million Federal Grant for TTU Building
The Health, Education and Welfare Department approved a 1.5 million dollar federal grant to Texas Tech University for a new business administration classroom and faculty office building on 15th Street and Flint Avenue. Johnson questions timing of anti inflation tax hike
