Tornado-spawn storms struck the eastern South Plains Tuesday night damaging at least five farm homes injuring one man and ripping a 15-foot section from a paved road. Baseball-size hail battered Panhandle areas while golf-ball sized hail fell elsewhere.
The Midas II satellite, the first of its kind, orbits Earth to test infrared sensors for rapid detection of missile launches. It will provide up to 30 minutes warning of a sneak attack and operates on Atlas Agena launch gear from California to Chile.
Lockheed Missile and Space Division describes an artist's drawing of the Agena satellite launch sequence from Cape Canaveral. The Atlas ICBM booster lifts off, the vehicle coasts and orients, then Agena’s engine fires to reach 18 000 mph and target altitude before stabilizing nose-down to enter orbit for rapid attack warning missions.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted unanimously to begin an impartial inquiry Friday into the spy plane incident and related summit breakdown. Chairman Fulbright said the hearings will be open to the public, with cooperation from the State Department and CIA funds oversight.
Union bricklayers in Lubbock and nearby areas walk off jobs after contract talks with the Associated General Contractors break down. About 200 union men are out, with work stopped on most commercial sites and some residences. No pickets yet, and contractors may use nonunion crews if needed. Farris Bryant defeating Doyle Carlton Jr. in the Florida Democratic gubernatorial runoff signals a likely November victory in a heavily Democratic state. Bryant, age 45, accused Governor Collins of out of step with voters while Carlton favored a moderate stance on segregation. Unofficial returns show Bryant with 408,396 to Carlton's 374,878 from 1,556 of 1,971 precincts.

Two elderly business operators in Lubbock were robbed within six hours of each other. One victim, 74 year old Jack Atkins, lost 350 dollars at his Second Hand Store near Ave F after a slugging with a crowbar. A second man, R. M. Gordy, owner of a Shoe Shop, later reported his own robbery. Both incidents occurred near well lighted intersections as patrol officers passed nearby.
Lloyd E. Shuffstall, 51, a former mental patient sought in the killings of his wife and a neighbor, was captured Tuesday in a wooded area about a mile from his home in Cooperstown Pennsylvania. He was found propped against a tree trunk, weak from a self inflicted shotgun wound to the chin.
