South Plains potato growers call meeting to seek price hike

J B McCauley Jr of Lubbock issues call for a Monday night gathering in the county courthouse to petition raise the potato price from 2.80 to 3.50 per hundred. Dozens of growers from Lubbock Crosby counties plan to attend with Don L Jones of the state experiment station expected to be present.

Any Promise To Feed World Silly Says Editor Of Journal

Stockholm May 22 Mussolini told Hitler on April 12 Italy would not seek separate peace but proposed joint peace if a dead point arrives. He urged against adventurous offensives and outlined four points including no imperialistic aims, peace with the Catholic church, stopping Jewish persecution, and not sending more Italians to fight on the Russian front. Romania would provide main support as 10 Romanian divisions fought in Russia with six in reserve.

Poles Dragged From Pawiak Prison Reported in War Bond Notice

London May 22 Poles killed and hurled into a burning building are alleged in an underground radio report quoted by the Polish telegraph agency. The broadcast claimed 94 Poles including five women were dragged from Warsaw’s Pawiak prison.

State auction offers Eureka cabin cruiser and more

The Texas State Board of Control advertises items for sale to the highest bidder including a 48 foot cabin cruiser named Eureka, 1500716 pounds of waste paper, and 60 tons of steel. Sealed bids for the boat are due May 28 in Austin. Waste paper from Confederate home records and two salvaged bridge girders in Lampasas county will also be auctioned May 31 and May 35 respectively.

Ship Production At Record Peak in 1943 Output

Admiral Emory Land announced that U S shipyards will deliver 700 ships by end of May and produce about 19 million deadweight tons of dry cargo ships and tankers in 1943. He noted a 157 ship 30 day record last month and that this month’s pace is higher.

Indictments In Death Of Teacher Quashed

First degree murder convictions of James Reedl and LeRoy Ritchey for the hammer killing of California teacher Mrs. Abigail Agnes Williams were quashed by Federal Judge Tillman D. Johnson. The court ruled it lacked jurisdiction as the federal statute applied only to violence against an Indian or federal property on the reservation.

Graduation Services Slated May 30 31 At High School

Graduation activities at Senior High include baccalaureate on May 30 and commencement on May 31. Dr. Jack M. Lewis will deliver the sermon at 2:30 p m. and Capt W B Irvin will speak at the commencement. The high school orchestra will perform at both services and diplomas will be awarded by Dr J J Hutchinson. Senior exams run Monday and Tuesday with Senior Day on Thursday a Buffalo Lakes picnic to follow.

Advertising Record Set In Bond Drive

Secretary Morgenthau announced the second war loan campaign raised over 18 billion dollars with 73 988 newspaper advertisements valued at 4 564 270. He called it the greatest advertising operation in history. Daily and Sunday papers ran 40 774 ads worth 3 362 890. weekly papers 33 164 ads worth 1 201 380. All ads were locally sponsored.
