The Texas Senate approved a redistricting plan on Wednesday after debate aimed at federal court avoidance. The bill creates 31 districts reducing rural influence and giving Houston and four other large cities 11 senate seats, with seven incumbents set to lose.
Severe storms sweep South Texas and eastern New Mexico with hail and heavy rain. A three man federal court in Houston orders legislative reapportionment or threat of new lines. Gov. A Pakistan International Airlines flight on a new route crashed while approaching Cairo, radio contact was lost minutes before the radar disappearance. Wreckage lay five hours from the airport as the Boeing neared landing. Fire and smoke were reported as rescuers raced to the scene.
In Lubbock today the District Optimist Meet begins with about 500 pervora expected to attend. Seniors of Lubbock display a positive attitude in a survey. A .38 bullet fired during a window holdup at Busch Stadium grazed 1 year old Karolyn Yount seated behind third base as the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals played in the third inning. The girl was treated at the first aid station and police said the gunmen escaped with a sizeable amount from the pavilion box office.
Singer Phyllis McGuire testified before a federal grand jury about her friendship with Chicago crime boss Momo Giancana and their resort travels. Her attorney Edward Beretta Williams escorted her as she attempted to leave the courthouse amid reporters.
Second Lt. William D Larson was killed in a one vehicle crash on State Hwy 17 near Mo et while en route to Stead AFB Reno after visiting parents in Swedenborg. Authorities forwarded preliminary details noting the incident occurred Wednesday with Larson returning to England assignment.
In Arlington a 21 year old Irving man wanted for questioning in a slaying and kidnapping was critically wounded during a shootout in an Arlington apartment where he had held three officers and a college student as hostages. Police identified the wounded man as Charles Gabi Capone, who had been shot earlier in the night. Five shots rang out as officers from Arlington, Tarrant and Dallas County, along with Texas Rangers, surrounded the apartment.
Five people were involved in a late night confrontation starting at an Irving apartment. Decker, a former employee, faced four gunshots and a hostage standoff as the suspect forced Dallas County Deputy Bill Decker at gunpoint to drive toward Arlington. The shooter fled into an Arlington State College area residence with three hostages, while a deputy tried to mediate before gunfire erupted.
The UN mediated truce preceded by tank advances as rebel held Santo Domingo radio station Santo Do res downtown fell to junta troops. Bodies were seen near the station and U S sources said rebel resistance was near collapse. OAS officials cautioned the report was unofficial amid peace efforts.
