Cooper Tells of Mercury Flight and manual reentry

Cooper describes his Mercury mission chaos as loss of automatic controls and inverters forced manual reentry. He recalls the 19th orbit over the Pacific, testing systems, and reliance on backup controls before landing aboard the USS Kearsarge. He notes waking, sleep patterns, daylight stars, and seeing helicopters at splashdown.

Glenn Says Cooper Had No Real Danger During 22 Orbit Flight

Col. John H. Glenn Jr states Gordon Cooper was not in serious danger during his 22 orbit flight. Glenn, aboard a tracking ship near Japan, helped with a radio countdown as Cooper manually fired retro-rockets to land in the Pacific near Midway Island. He notes the automatic system failed and credits backup systems, calling his own aid limited but present. Glenn arrives in Tokyo for a 12 day visit billed as a vacation by the U S Embassy and plans courtesy calls with Japanese officials including Crown Prince Akihito.
