Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper, famed for 22 orbits, touched down in Hawaii to a tearful wife and cheering crowd. Cooper expressed elation at returning stateside and noted the welcome’s significance.
A converted school bus carrying farm laborers sank in a 65 foot wide canal near Elle Glade Florida. At least 27 people died including 13 adults and 10 children. Fifteen escaped through windows as divers later recovered bodies. The bus was a 1946 model with 33 seats and was painted silver with a yellow top.
Western diplomats planned a new push for disarmament and warned the Soviet Union time is running out to halt nuclear spread. Britain and allies defended NATO’s right to a strategic nuclear force, raising hopes for a possible summit on a nuclear test ban as discussions continue at Chequers with Macmillan and advisers.
Gov. John Connally disclosed 25 names for the Committee on Education Beyond the High School. Dr. D. M. Wiggins, former Texas Tech president, is among 19 lay members and six educators. H. B. Zachry chairs the panel, with meetings slated in Austin in June and funding totaling $200,000 to study Texas colleges through Aug. 31, 194.

President Kennedy drew large crowds in Nashville Muscle Shoals and Huntsville as he urged progress amid segregation tensions. Governor Wallace greeted him politely in Alabama and troops remained in dispute over Birmingham racial unrest.
A Pacific cool front triggered thunderstorms and hail across the South Plains and New Mexico with Portales reporting 1.8 to 3 inches of moisture. Portales telephone and power services were disrupted briefly while Friona Bovina and nearby areas logged up to 1.75 inches of rain. Scattered showers were forecast to continue across the region, offering limited relief to dryland farms.
