Cooper Returns From Space Flight Guides View of Earth

Apollo era report details Gordon Cooper after his 22 orbit flight. He described seeing Clear Lake Houston from 110 miles up and spotted features across the United States and Africa. Doctors called him a completely normal human being with no lingering after effects and noted recovered eyes and voice.

Lubbock Man Killed In Southeast Drive Crash

A gravel truck and a station wagon collided on Southeast Drive at 48th Street injuring and killing the occupants. King John Daniel Mitchell, 55, of 507 56th St., died after the 4:25 p.m. crash. Roy Dwayne Preston, 24, of Slaton, the truck driver, was uninjured. The truck, owned by Byrd Sand and Gravel Co., was passing the wagon when Mitchell turned left into its path. The wagon overturned and Mitchell was thrown from the vehicle. Police noted 118 feet of skid marks. A second crash on U.S. 87 near Erskine Road injured two men, with one hospitalized. Legislation Stymied in Texas Legislature on Women's Rights

Supporters urged Governor Connally to intervene as a Senate approved bill for equal rights stalled in the House. Rep. Whitfield failed to move the measure from the House Insurance Committee to Public Printing in a 78-57 vote. If brought to the floor it would need 100 votes to pass or return to the Senate. The Senate adjourned while a spending conference negotiates, and House members granted conference committee authority to meet in session.
