Legislation Stymied in Texas Legislature on Women's Rights
Supporters urged Governor Connally to intervene as a Senate approved bill for equal rights stalled in the House. Rep. Whitfield failed to move the measure from the House Insurance Committee to Public Printing in a 78-57 vote. If brought to the floor it would need 100 votes to pass or return to the Senate. The Senate adjourned while a spending conference negotiates, and House members granted conference committee authority to meet in session.
