Auto crashes killed 10 people in Central Texas since 6 p m Friday. Five killed in a two car collision 312 miles west of Belton. Victims include Pfc George J Finley Specialist 4/C Kenneth Saye George G Roettger Jr Katherine Ursula Hoeschen 17 and Heide Hoffman 17. Saye was alone in one car. All were connected to Fort Hood.
Special to The Avalanche Journal reports a 2%-month-old girl, daughter of an Air Force chaplain, died when the family car overturned repeatedly east of the caprock on a Sunday aternoon. Dianna Alexander died en route to Sheppard Air Force Base. The parents survived with abrasions. The incident raised Motley County traffic fatalities to 31 for the year.
George V. Allen said the U-2 pilot Francs u Powers was ordered to admit an intelligence mission if captured by the Russians. He noted Powers carried a hypodermic needle to avoid torture and a pistol, and urged a fair trial while Moscow presses for severe punishment including the death penalty.

A fast moving thunderstorm formed Sunday and dissipated early today after threatening an area from Wilson to Ralls with rain and hail. Officials forecast scattered thundershowers on the South Plains as a cool front moves down from Colorado and temperatures rise. Statewide, scattered thundershowers dotted the western half of Texas Sunday night with near summer heat. Lubbock hit 91 degrees.
In Ashville Tennessee Howard Criswell 18 was arrested after a string of 16 sniping attacks. His parents say he would not hurt anyone and deny he confessed blaming an urge to kill. Prosecutors report nine admissions while the neighborhood remains shaken.
Western powers expressed resolve to deter Soviet miscalculation in Berlin and signal readiness to seek a Four Power commission to handle Berlin and German questions. They doubted Khrushchev would risk a unilateral move, while warning he might sign a peace pact if talks fail and press Western garrisons from Berlin.
Ava Shipp Faust 64 of Littlefield died in a two car crash on U S 70 west of Hondo New Mexico. State police reported her car and a second vehicle driven by Hedwig L Stutzman of San Diego California sideswiped and spun. Stutzman escaped injury.
