President Johnson's top economist Arthur Okun told 100 corporate leaders that price stability will require a long road and possible wage price guidelines. He said a tax increase could slow inflation in the second half of the year and urged voluntary restraint in wage and price decisions without direct controls.
In Saigon fighting rages as American troops battle hundreds of trapped Viet Cong near the city. UPI reports at least 427 North Vietnamese casualties and nearly 3,500 Communist deaths since the offensive began, with generals Tran Qui Hoi and Pham Kiet directing operations in Quang Tri and Thua Thien provinces. Civilians injured by a mortar shell near a Saigon bus terminal as efforts to insert more troops continue.
Floodwaters and storms lash Texas with torrential rain and hail for days. Midland officials tally damage running into millions while five cities endure flash floods. Lubbock and the South Plains report heavy precipitation, scattered thunderstorms, and rising flood risk as forecasts hint at partial relief tonight.
