Arizona State coed dies in two car crash in Lubbock
Virginia Mae Turner 19 of 4601 16th St was pronounced dead at Methodist Hospital after a two car collision at 10th St and Ave Xx. The Texas Tech student from Quitman Gid Roger Johnson 18 was driving the other car. Officer Dan Emerine said he signaled Johnson with horn and lights as his car headed west while Turner went south. Turner was thrown against a street marker. She was a 1965 Lubbock High School graduate and a former cheerleader. Survivors include a brother, two sisters, and a grandfather. The death marked Lubbock’s seventh this year.

Harold L. Gray creator of Little Orphan Annie died Thursday in Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla California at age 74. He had moved from Connecticut five months earlier and contributed 44 years as a cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune and New York News syndicate. the strip remained in many papers at his death.

OPRY Founder Hay Dies At 72 In Nashville
George D. Hay known as the Solemn Ole Judge died at 72 in Nashville. He originated Radio Station WSM's Grand Ole Opry which became a national symbol of rural American music. Hay began his career as Memphis Commercial Appeal radio editor and first aired in June 1923 on WMC.

Violent storms flood Midland and South Plains
Dozens of communities faced heavy rains and tornado warnings as storms moved across the South Plains. In Midland a 4.75 inch downpour caused flooding, a lumber yard was struck by a small tornado, and U S 80 traffic was disrupted.
