Local reports show the Lulag Convention ends with a business session at 10 a.m. in Lubbock. A retirement coffee honors Mrs. J T Baisden after 35 years of teaching. District 2 4 H Club contest winners announced at Tech.
Widening dispute at the Lubbock County Commissioners Court stalls any action on a redistricting proposal. Four commissioners back redrawing but discuss only in pairs. Judge Shaw plans a Monday afternoon briefing after residents and maps are studied. Brazell signals possible immediate action if debate allows.
U S. withholds recognition of either rebel provisional president or loyalist junta as sniping persists. One U.S. Marine killed and three paratroopers wounded in Haina and along the Refugio corridor amid crossfire. Rebels denounce the junta as unacceptable while accusing Maj Gen Antonio Imbert Barrera of betrayal. The toll rises to 13 American fatalities and 75 wounded in the two week rebellion.
Jim Wright told LULAC delegates at a state convention that the hemisphere has an opportunity and responsibility to support a stable democratic government in the Dominican Republic. He defended U.S. intervention as necessary to protect citizens and prevent another Cuba while acknowledging risks of associating with undemocratic regimes. Wright also hinted at a 1986 Senate run against John Tower.
Despite 40 mph winds about 20,000 South Plains residents toured Reese Air Force Base open house for Armed Forces Day. An aerial show was largely canceled by crosswinds while Don Pittman performed in a blue and white plane. Officials and Lubbock leaders unveiled a new monument sign at the intersection of Levelland highway and Spur 308, presented by the Chamber of Commerce. The sign will be lit at night.
Two area students earned top marks at the National Science Fair in St. Louis, placing among 18 top winners. The Roosevelt High pupil from Lubbock County and a student from Lamesa highlighted the story and photo on Page 10, Section A with other honorees.
Legislative ballyhoo over teacher pay raises peaks this week with hearings on the Texas State Teachers Assn. plan for a $405 annual increase and Gov. Connally's 10 year graduated raise. Final decisions likely in the governor’s office as tax measures determine total funds. Connally’s veto power gives him strong influence over the outcome.
In Kerrville and statewide, Connally argues a single answer to government fairness versus pressure groups. He says he can raise 50 million for a pay raise if tax revenue supports it, and suggests using a veto to control the final teacher pay increase tied to a new tax bill.
A Saturday night tornado tore through Primrose Nebraska killing four of 117 residents and flattening most downtown buildings except a damaged schoolhouse. Gov. Morrison placed National Guard units on alert and ordered them into Primrose to register residents and tally casualties. Several other Nebraska towns and a broad Midwest storm outbreak endured damage as far as Grand Island and ONeill while Texas faced dust storms and hail.

Donald Dawson 25 a merchant Marine officer and Lt. Daniel L. Dawson 77 who went down last November near Saigon are sakep prisoner of the Viet Cong. The younger Dawson met Viet Cong leaders with a priest and a Vietnamese interpreter to discuss recovering Daniel’s body and possible release. Collette Embarger 21 agreed to accompany partway before they were arrested, raising danger and uncertainty about the mission.
