U S. withholds recognition of either rebel provisional president or loyalist junta as sniping persists. Wright addresses LULAC convention on democracy in the Hemisphere

Jim Wright told LULAC delegates at a state convention that the hemisphere has an opportunity and responsibility to support a stable democratic government in the Dominican Republic. He defended U.S. intervention as necessary to protect citizens and prevent another Cuba while acknowledging risks of associating with undemocratic regimes. Wright also hinted at a 1986 Senate run against John Tower.

Open House At Reese Air Force Base Draws 20000

Despite 40 mph winds about 20,000 South Plains residents toured Reese Air Force Base open house for Armed Forces Day. An aerial show was largely canceled by crosswinds while Don Pittman performed in a blue and white plane. Officials and Lubbock leaders unveiled a new monument sign at the intersection of Levelland highway and Spur 308, presented by the Chamber of Commerce. The sign will be lit at night.

Local science fair winners named from Roosevelt and Lamesa

Tornado Routs Primrose Nebraska Flattening Town

A Saturday night tornado tore through Primrose Nebraska killing four of 117 residents and flattening most downtown buildings except a damaged schoolhouse. Gov. Morrison placed National Guard units on alert and ordered them into Primrose to register residents and tally casualties. Several other Nebraska towns and a broad Midwest storm outbreak endured damage as far as Grand Island and ONeill while Texas faced dust storms and hail.

Donald Dawson 25 a merchant Marine officer and Lt. Daniel L. Dawson 77 who went down last November near Saigon are sakep prisoner of the Viet Cong. The younger Dawson met Viet Cong leaders with a priest and a Vietnamese interpreter to discuss recovering Daniel’s body and possible release. Collette Embarger 21 agreed to accompany partway before they were arrested, raising danger and uncertainty about the mission.
