Russian engineer envisions atom powered trains
Moscow May 7. Russian engineer Yuri Moralevich envisions 15 foot gauge mainline trains with atomic powered locomotives and ocean liner style passenger cars, three times current track width, enabling Moscow to Leningrad trips in three to four hours and Odessa in 750 miles. The concept relies on a safe compact atomic engine and broad car designs with air conditioning baths and even a swimming pool. The US meanwhile funds a one year study for a nuclear powered reciprocating engine for locomotives.
