Gov. Preston Smith in Lubbock said the impasse between the House and Senate over term lengths is not driving a special session. He favors completing all work in the regular session including redistricting and a teacher pay bill, and questions voter support for longer terms. He blamed a Senate rider for a six year term plan as a mistake.
Mississippi River floods push past seven feet above overflow levels threatening Dubuque Clinton Davenport and Moline as crews reinforce soft spots along dikes at Keithsburg Oquawka Niota and Quincy. A young man in a conservative suit robbed the Hi-Lo Grocery of $100 on Friday and fled with a blonde accomplice. They escaped in a stolen car, abandoned it nearby, and jumped into a large automobile with an older man driving. In a separate dispatch, Red China hosts Tokyo celebrations as dawns new nuclear power boasts.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Spelling Bee winner is expected to be determined this afternoon at O. L. Slaton Junior High School. Contest runs from around 1:30 p.m. onward with the top speller to be crowned.

The opening of the annual Scout Circus at Lubbock Municipal Coliseum drew about 1,200 Cubs Boy and Explorer Scouts with spectators numbering more than twice that. The year’s show follows a historical trail from The Men to Cubs On the Moon and Breakthrough For Youth. The grand entry fills the Coliseum floor and surrounding area with moving Scouts and vast camping gear.
