Monterey Tops Literary Meet At Canyon High

Monterey High School students won first place in the district literary meet held Saturday at Canyon. Schools competing included Amarillo Lubbock Monterey Palo Duro Pampa Plainview. Winners advance to contests at Texas Tech on March 12. In Amarillo, Mont placed second in tennis and track. Plainview hosted golf with Pampa first and Borger second.

Third Annual Avalanche-Journal Home Show Opens Soon

Plans nearly complete for the Third Annual Avalanche-Journal Home Show with expanded exhibits and nightly entertainment. Wayne Henly announces “Merry Macs” will perform twice daily with Herman Waldman Orchestra backing in Dallas, plus daily shows and weekend matinees at the Lubbock venue. Local Man Killed In Two Vehicle Crash In Lubbock

Masonry contractor Bascum Dupre Stephens aged 52 died after a collision at Avenue A and 50th Street in Lubbock. An airman from Amarillo AFB and his wife were injured. The crash, at about 7:30 p.m., was the year’s second traffic fatality in the city.
