Ship Attacked In Caribbean by Soviet Planes Near Cuba

Unidentified jet planes, likely MIGs, fired on the 360 foot U S motor ship Floridian in international waters off Cuba. The attack, following Fidel Castro s warning, prompted U S Navy Corsairs and Marine Phantoms to respond while officials weighed retaliation options. The Floridian, owned by South Atlantic and Caribbean Line, carried general cargo between Palm Beach and Puerto Rico with a 24 crew.

Paving Contract Approved and City Plans Move Ahead

City commissioners awarded a 546 503 paving contract to L A Purtell of Lubbock for the 1963 program, approved nine zone changes, and moved to tighten downtown parking. They also created a juvenile counseling service and a Workeration program, approved 410 000 bonds for a Canadian River Dam water pipeline, and adopted welfare manual changes. Two Youth Council recommendations were approved creating a separate counseling agency with three staffers. See CITY PLANS Page 10.

In Clovis, the investigation into the March double slayings shifts as Atty. Two Injured In Hale Collision Near U S 87

Hale Center special report says two people were seriously hurt in a pickup truck versus automobile crash on U.S. Route 87, 3 miles south of Hale Center at 7 30 p m. James W Whitaker of Plainview suffered chest injuries and was listed in fair condition, while Cressie Mayo of Paducah aged Rt 1 was in fair condition with a broken leg and arm. Whitaker’s wife Juanita Whitaker was driving the car, Katy Ricketson of Plainview drove the pickup which overturned after a swerving maneuver to avoid a head on collision.
