Four gunmen wearing hoods entered the I Magnin store on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles and looted gems possibly valued at 500000. No injuries were reported though many customers and employees were jostled in the chaos. Police and investigators planned an all-night inventory to assess the loss.
The Lubbock area announces Dr Charles Meister as president of Eastern New Mexico University Portales. Other items list upcoming county spelling bees and notices of state legislature actions affecting West Texas and the South Plains.
Rep George Hinson of Mineola says final action on a constitutional amendment and enabling legislation to fund student loans for Texas colleges should occur within the week The plan envisions a bond financed fund of 75 to 100 million dollars and requires voter approval in the November election to create a program aiding deserving students regardless of financial status.
Nine year old Bryan Eastman was critically injured when his foot tangled in a rope on a newly acquired horse named Ringo at the family farm in Bend Street and Indiana. The third grader at St Christopher’s School was treated in the intensive care unit of Methodist Hospital after the incident at about 3 20 p.m. He was riding with Linda Moore and Kevin McKelvy when the mishap occurred as he tried to dismount.

The lions family returns home after a Dane joins to calm Pharoah who is deemed a public nuisance.
California authorities say a rifle owned by Terrel Eddy, alleged organizer of the National States Rights Party based in Birmingham, was found among numerous machine pistols at the Erquiaga Arms Co plant in a raid. Federal and local authorities seized 273 weapons and 100000 rounds of ammo, some intended for extremist groups, while the plant operator claimed the arms were for anti Castro Latin forces. Eddy had used a San Diego mailbox as a return address and has been active in the state since September.
