Astronauts land a spaceship as major world and national items fill the pages. A Detroit woman Viola Gregg Liuzza was shot dead in her car west of Montgomery after helping marchers from Montgomery to Selma. The killing followed MLK Jr leading about 25,000 people to the Alabama Capitol for a voter rights march climax. State and federal authorities launched a probe as four white men faced murder charges in other related slayings during the registration drive.
Kennedy era astronauts Virgil Grissom and John Young spoke at a Cape Kennedy briefing after their three orbital flight. Reports described the postflight celebrations, medical debriefings, and plans for a White House medal ceremony with President Johnson.
Gen Curtis LeMay, retired Air Force chief, warned that Soviet space gains could threaten U S military balance. He said Moscow’s space programs appear more aggressive than peaceful and could enable strategic weapon delivery from near space, undermining U S programs. He noted poor U S tracking of Soviet intentions.
City officials approved a new A-3 zoning class to legalize high rise apartment buildings and discussed a 10 12 story project at Boston Ave and 19th St by a Denver firm planning 102 apartments. They also advanced plans for three new community centers at Mae Simmons Rodgers and Guadalupe Parks and approved other civic measures.
A collision near the New Mexico line east of Bledsoe at about 5 p.m. Thursday killed Anton farmer Anton Webb, 31, and injured three others. Passengers Ernest Cantrell, 37, James Cantrell, 28, both of Anton, and Wayne Cantrell, 30, were taken to Morton See, with one in critical condition. Funeral arrangements were pending at Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home.
The city council adopted an ordinance creating a new seven member Electrical Utility Board to oversee development, production and distribution of electric utility service. Current Lubbock Power and Light executives join as advisory figures while two new members are slated for future appointment. The board, described as quasi operational, will replace the Utilities Advisory Board and report to the council with duties including issuing recommendations and guiding city utility policy.
Wintry conditions sweep Texas as snow, sleet and freezing drizzle threaten roads. The Weather Bureau warned of icing from the Panhandle to North Texas with light accumulations in Lubbock and the South Plains. Highways faced delays and at least one flight was canceled at Lubbock Municipal Airport as a broad cold front reshaped travel.
The Texas Legislature debated pay raises for speakers and presiding officers with a $12 500 amendment and a $25 000 annual House figure. A plan to set salaries up to 12 000 for lawmakers faced back and forth, while the speaker and lieutenant governor would receive 4 800 a year plus an apartment. A bill taxing Ancient Free and Accepted Masons property was defeated after House votes. See LEGISLATURE Page 6.

The event followed stops in Midland and preceded a Fort Worth finale.
