Argentina junta backs civilian controls after coup
A new Argentine military junta led by Gen. Alejandro Lanusse toppled Gen. Roberto Levingston as president and backs restoring civilian rule within about two years. Normal life continues with schools open and business as usual while currency trading is suspended for now to prevent a peso run. Peron’s influence lingers as the military faces rising unpopularity though Lanusse promises open democratic steps.
