Eight year old John Berthelon rushed door to door in Far Rockaway Queens seeking a telephone to summon police after a sand pile buried his friend Alan Weinstein. Police later dug Weinstein from hot sand but he had been buried about an hour and could not be revived despite mouth to mouth and doctor’s pronouncement of death. Residents' failure to heed his pleas prompted investigation into the incident.

North Vietnamese artillery, rockets, and mortars hit four U S Marine bases near the DMZ. Massive explosions destroyed ammunition and fuel as Dong Ha, Cua Viet, Da Nang, and Khe Sanh faced attacks. Casualties reported as light at most bases, with one government soldier killed near Dong Ha.

Oregon Pen riot ends after 16 hour siege and warden resignation

Rioting prisoners at the Oregon State Penitentiary halted Sunday after a 16 hour rebellion. Four guards held overnight were released unharmed. five were hospitalized after severe beatings. The uprising caused about 5 million dollars in damage and led to the warden's resignation and concessions including a prisoner grievance committee and reforms.

Tulsa Woman Thwarts Teen Attack Inflicts Fatal Wound

Mrs. Verda Byrd 44 reported a teen forced her into her car after she used a Tulsa telephone booth before 3 am. She fired twice with a .22 revolver as the assailant tried to drive off and rammed the booth. Ricky William Manuel 17 died at Hillcrest Medical Center. Byrd remained hospitalized for shock.

Tornado Rips Plains Area as Snow Follows Across Panhandle
