Middle East Tension Escalates as Refugees Move to Jerusalem

In Gaza and the Palestinian coastal city, new demonstrations by Arab refugees and unconfirmed reports of Israeli troop actions increased tensions. A convoy transported 16 wives and children of UN truce observers through Israeli territory to Arab Jerusalem for safety. UN truce team head Francois Gicomaggi warned the situation was becoming extremely difficult and urged safer conditions away from Gaza.

Evacuation Ordered As Pahoa Faces Possible Erup tion

Non residents were ordered from Pahoa Hawaii and officials prepared to evacuate the town on moment's notice as tremors signaled potential new eruptions. About 200 people east and south of the town were being moved, with nearly 400 refugees in Pahea from bubbling Puna. Dr Gordon A. MacDonald urged evacuation then tempered it to avoid panic.

Robbery and Burglary Incidents Reported in Lubbock

Police investigated several thefts and break ins with minor injuries and no major losses. A 62-year-old G. W. Wilkinson said a white man beat and robbed him of 38 dollars in the Negro district Friday night, treated at Porter Clinic. Pioneer Cookie Co. thefts yielded 20 dollars cash and 57.80 in a check. Tools worth 75 dollars were stolen from a pickup on 37th Street and a 50 dollar Stetson vanished from a car on Broadway.

Fight Looms Over Yoakum County Audit Request

A pitched battle over whether Yoakum County should have an official audit is slated for the County Commissioners Court meeting on March 14. Backers say hundreds signed a petition urging the audit, which would be the first complete county books audit in 15 years. Opponents and cost estimates from $10,000 to $25,000 loom, with a grand jury investigation into state affairs possible. a 106th District grand jury meets March 18.

Flooding along the Ohio River spurred hundreds of families to flee as the cold front grips the midwest and South. The Panhandle and Texas face a deepening chill with forecast lows near 8 to 20 degrees and a warming trend later. New Hybrid Grain Program Revealed At Meeting Here

Dr. N. W. Kramer told more than 150 Texas seed growers at the Texas Certified Seed Growers Association gathering at Texas Tech that a hybrid grain sorghum will be commercially grown in Texas this year, the first such production worldwide. The effort involves J. Roy Quinby and J. C. Stephens from the Chillcothe substation and Dr. R. E. Karper, with Kramer active in hybrid sorghum research at Lubbock Substation.

First Methodist Opens New Building at 13th Street

The First Methodist Church begins using its new building at 13th St and Ave M with an 8 a.m. service in the sanctuary moved from Broadway and Ave M. A 10:50 a.m. service will follow, both led by Dr J Chess Levern. The Texas Tech Choir will sing at the 7:30 p.m. service. Open house runs noon to 7 p.m. and 9 to 10:30 p.m.

Authorities proved the Green River slaying suspect, killed by a railroad agent, was not the ex convict Melvin Henry Gray as once believed. Fingerprint tests showed the man used the same name while in the Pinedale area, complicating the case in Wyoming and Utah.

County Stock Show Honors At Slaton In 14th Event

Frenship and New Deal FFA members won grand champion honors at the 14th annual Lubbock County Stock Show held at Slaton High School field. Bobby Weiss of New Deal took sheep top with a Southdown lamb. Mike Gross of Lubbock 4H won for Hereford calf. Grand champions in swine went to John Powers in gilt with a lightweight Duroc and Sammy McWhorter of Frenship for barrow with a Poland China. Judges included Texas Tech agri education professor T. L. Leach. More than 100 fans braved cold winds as show superintendents guided the event.
