A second cold front swept through the South Plains Monday night with wind driven rain and snow following a day of plummeting temperatures. The system part of a larger storm from the Rockies caused thunder showers across North Central and East Texas and a brief tornado alert near Dallas Fort Worth. The front moved into the Panhandle and South Plains early Monday, dropping Lubbock temperatures from 61 at midnight to 35 by dawn.

Elwood Jacobsen of Foreston Minnesota and Gaspar Mikil of the Philippines were killed when a Viet Cong unit halted their convoy 70 miles northeast of Saigon. The two men, both 35, were in Vietnam to study languages. their wives and children were nearby as the attack unfolded. A Vietnamese soldier tied to the guerrillas was also killed and two Mikil children were wounded but not seriously.
