McNamara Testimony Continues on Viet Nam Buildup

Secretary McNamara warned Congress that Communist forces in South Vietnam could rise by about half this year while U.S. airstrikes target supply lines. Mississippi Tornado Toll Tops Fifty Five

A severe tornado smashed central Mississippi on Thursday, killing at least 55 and injuring about 400, with Alabama also struck and one death near Tuscaloosa. The wave halted in Jackson and Candlestick Park, leaving wreckage across Flowood Forkville and Leesburg. Authorities warned the toll could rise as debris was searched.

Dust storm cripples South Plains winds to 70 mph

Avalanche-Journal reports hurricane force winds across the South Plains for over 13 hours creating zero visibility, unroofing a home, toppling trees and power lines, and damaging signs and trailers. A weak cold front signaled an end to the dust as temperatures rose and visibility improved.

Wind Blown Fire Destroys Lovington Dealership

A Lovington auto showroom, Jackson Chevrolet Inc., was destroyed by a wind driven fire Thursday night. 10TH ST PROJECT PRIVATE DORM ZONING APPROVED

The City Planning and Zoning Commission approved a revised plan for a private dormitory at 10th St and College Ave and zoning for three apartment projects. The 7 story dorm will have off street parking across from the Texas Tech campus, with concerns the building would sit closer to 10th Street than allowed. Also approved was R-3 zoning for apartments on two tracts.

City race sees new candidates loom for Lubbock ballot

The Lubbock municipal race ahead of the Saturday filing deadline may welcome one or two more candidates. A mayor and two council members will be elected on April 5. W. E. Medlock will finish his term on the council, leaving Rolan Simpson as the known mayoral contender. Incumbent Max Tidmore will not run. Council candidates include Mrs. Melville R. Monte and Roy Middleton for Simpsons seat, while Dr. James Granberry seeks the Alderson vacancy. The Avalanche Journal reports potential announcements today or Saturday.
