Olton Area Farmer Killed In Rural Collision

A widely known Olton area farmer, Fred L. Bass Sr., 59, died in a pickup truck car crash at a rural intersection northeast of Olton. Four members of the Johnson family, E. W. Johnson of Rt. 4 Orton and his children Cynthia 7 and Stevie 5, were injured in the Saturday afternoon crash.

Helicopter crash kills five Marines in Luzon clash

In Luzon an H34C helicopter crashed killing five U S Marines and leaving one missing during a routine local op eration near Subic Bay. Survivors were rescued by Cubi Point Naval Air Station crews as authorities withheld names pending relatives notification. A separate Mindanao airliner missing with 27 aboard prompted a search after wreckage sighted near Malalag with crews en route to aid potential survivors.

2 000 Said On Liner From Cuba

Reports from Havana claim a large scale Soviet pullout from Cuba has begun with 2 000 troops evacuated aboard the Baltika and another 6 000 expected in the coming weeks. Pentagon officials say it is too early to confirm and McNamara notes the president’s expectation of several thousand leaving within weeks. Khrushchev had promised a withdrawal following talks with the United States.

Connally to reveal new spending plan sequence in Texas

Biggest Yet 1963 Derby Plans For Lubbock Area

The All American Soap Box Derby returns in 1963 with a July 15 local race date announced by Avalanche Journal Modern Chevrolet and Exchange Club representatives. Registration starts March 9 at Modern Chevrolet with clinics dates to be announced and wheels and axles available locally. A projected 200 participants from area communities expected for the August 3 climax. Also, Soviet Defense Minister Malinovsky to visit Indonesia in late March per Radio Indonesia.

Nine more join area 50 Mile Club hikes amid injuries

Nine new hikers joined the area 50 Milers Club on a Saturday trek. A 15-year-old Lubbock girl dropped after 41 miles. Airmen from Reese AFB completed 50 miles in about 14 hours 30 minutes. A five-woman group from Lubock reached 25 miles before fatigue and foot pain halted several participants.

Mild over Texas as light showers spotted for weekend

Forecasters expected scattered light showers across the South Plains with mild daytime temperatures. Lubbock’s Weather Bureau noted a possibility of precipitation late today as a Pacific cold front stalled near the Panhandle.

Three more earthquakes struck the Libyan town of Al Marj on Saturday with no reported casualties. A government spokesman said at least two quakes daily have hit since the February 21 giant quake that killed over 250 people.

Kidnaping and armed robbery charged in Hereford case

Two gunmen face kidnapping and armed robbery charges after holding Gerald Nunley his wife and three children at gunpoint in Hereford. The assailants forced Nunley to open the store safe then took the family for a ride on a county road before fleeing with about $60, several guns and personal items. A lone Highway Patrolman captured the pair around 1 a.m. Saturday six miles from Hereford.

Robbery tied to Hereford area two men abduct Nunley family

Ronald Urban Trisler and James Wiley Wimiberly, both denied bond on kidnaping and armed robbery charges after abducting the Nunley family in Hereford. The family was held at home while the pair forced entry and opened the store safe. Nunley, store manager, described the attack and the loud TV that stayed on during the incident.

Ex-Juvenile Film Star Sentenced In Auto Theft Case

Lora Lee Scott and her husband Frank were sentenced in Houston federal court for driving a stolen 1962 convertible from Jonesboro Arkansas to Texas. Scott received 13 months in Alderson West Virginia prison, her husband 27 months. The couple had traveled six months across the South and East using three credit cards for $3,700 in charges.
