The Senate voted 86 to 1 to raise the official gold price by $2 an ounce, devaluing the dollar by about 12 percent and raising import costs as part of Nixon's anti trade deficit push. The move shifts the peg from $35 to higher levels, boosting U.S. gold value and prompting expected appropriations for devaluation programs.
The Nixon administration said relations could deteriorate tomorrow without surrender of U S positions. An anonymous informant credited the talks at Peking with each side giving ground on traditional cold war rhetoric.
