AVE G AS Nev. Band leader Red Nichols 60 died of a heart attack Monday after being stricken at his motel. Nichols led The Five Pennies at the Mint Hotel Casino since May 27 and built a 42 year career shaping big bands and classic ensembles. He mentored Benny Goodman Artie Shaw Jimmy Dorsey and Gene Krupa, with Glenn Miller among his early arrangers. His life story The Five Pennies became a 1958 film starring Danny Kaye. He was born in Ogden Utah on May 8 1905 son of a Weber College music professor.
A Pan American Jet carrying 153 aboard lost an outboard engine after takeoff from San Francisco. The Boeing 707 circled over the Pacific for 19 minutes before a safe landing at IRAVIS AFB. No injuries reported though debris harmed a building in San Bruno. Captain C H Kimes guided the stricken craft to land.
