Residents, numbering about 40,000, keep a distinct court and capital at Lyndhurst, with rights to harvest wood and turf, turn pigs loose for foraging, and claim home rights by building and firing a hearth. The forest chamber, Swainmote, dates to 900 years of self rule, and enclosures have stirred local concern while wartime secrecy hid 8,000 acres for France invasion preparations in 1944.
