The Lubbock region and Texas endured a seven day stretch from June 21 to 27 with record heat, averaging 101.3 degrees and peaking near 106 in spots. Forecasters warned the heat would continue, as statewide highs hit 99 in many cities and overnight lows remained unusually warm.

An Abernathy woman Louisa Olguin age 50 and her 2 year old grandson Alsamo Olivas were killed when their car was struck by a Santa Fe freight train at a Erskine Road crossing. Margarita Olivas and David Olivas were not injured. The crash occurred about 9 40 am Saturday with the car thrown 99 and 154 feet in different directions.
Silverton residents approve a $25,000 general obligation bond by 113 to 21 to fund a new city hall and fire truck garage. Officials say the vote does not raise taxes, since Silverton has no outstanding debt. building costs total about $30,000 with $10,000 from a special account and $6,000 in a ticking fund.

President Nixon will leave Washington July 23 for a round the world trip including observation of Apollo 11 splashdown in the Pacific and a first presidential crossing of the Iron Curtain into Romania in early August. He will visit Manila Jakarta Bangkok New Delhi and Lahore with Rogers and the First Lady joining portions.
George E. Benson 75 of 2814 20th St. dies at home. He was vice chairman of Lubbock National Bank and former president of Citizens National Bank. Services Monday at First Baptist Church with burial at City of Lubbock Cemetery. Benson helped start Lubbock Auto Co and led several local finance ventures.
President Nixon announced on Saturday the appointment of Dr. Roger Q. Egeberg as the nation’s top health official. Egeberg, 65, dean of USC Medical School, was chosen over Dr. John H. Knowles amid AMA opposition to Knowles and partial support for Egeberg from the medical community.
