The Maverick Campfire Tale From Spur Ranch
The Avalanche-Journal recounts how in July 1890 two Spur cowboys Sam and Jess found a three year old girl named Nita alone in a broken covered wagon near Innes Creek. They brought her to The Hearts Ranch and she became Nita Roberts after Mrs. Jim Roberts sheltered her. The story, preserved by W. J. Elliott, opens a series of Campfire Stories from the West Texas plains.

A Monahans 5 year old, Joe Bill Kemp, died at Midland Memorial Hospital after a head on collision on U S Highway 80 west of Midland. Four others remained critically injured along with a 16 year old, Errol Blaine Stewart, in separate crashes in Midland Martin and Andrews Counties. Two other youths were hospitalized after a single vehicle overturn near Midland. Investigators describe a chain of four traffic crashes Sunday with multiple families affected and victims transported to Midland Memorial Hospital.

Fire tears through Texas Tech Research Farm buildings
Flames swept a feeding shed barn and related facilities at the Texas Tech Research Farm near Amarillo causing an estimated 30 000 to 35 000 dollars in damage. About 25 cattle were moved from the burning building with no fatalities. The Killgore Beef Cattle Center under construction nearby was undamaged. J P Smith said operations would continue despite inconvenience as the cause remained under investigation. Fire discovered about 4 am and fought by Pan Tex depots and village units. Site lies five miles northeast of Amarillo Airport.

Midland Plumber Dies in Fire
The charred body of 40 year old Jake Ernest Clark was found in the ashes of his two story Midland home after a blaze started at 2 30 a m Sunday. Firefighters found the body in a ground floor bedroom as the rear of the house collapsed. Clark’s three children were taken to a neighbor’s home. An autopsy was ordered and funeral arrangements were pending. Survivors include Edward Ernest Clark Carolyn Clark and Katie Clark a brother Woody Clark and a sister.

Tornadoes Dip Down In Lamb County Northern South Plains storms
Turbulent weather returned to the South Plains with violent thunderstorms heavy rains hail and high winds. Two tornadoes spun harmlessly through Lamb County with another unconfirmed touch down near Cotton Center. High winds damaged hangars at City Airport south of Levelland and large hail covered ground five miles west of Earth. Roads closed across Lamb County and along U.S. highways with several farm roads blocked and flooding reported on major routes.

Soviet Tanker Ignores Signals Near Thresher Search Area
The Soviet tanker Pokyeatan passed through the Thresher search zone refusing to acknowledge light signals from the USS Fort Snelling and the research ship Conrad. The incident occurred as scientists aboard the Conrad photographed the ocean bottom and debris near the Thresher wreck about 220 miles from Boston at a depth of 8,400 feet. The Trieste will attempt to photograph the wreck today.
