India Lifts Need For US Military Aid Short of Hoped Sum
Washington says India will receive long term military assistance on a project by project basis with no total price tag yet set. Officials estimate the final figure near 300 million dollars, far short of Nehru and defense experts desires and well below the hoped 1.5 billion from Britain and other allies. The plan emphasizes radar, infantry and artillery arms and standby aircraft support rather than jet fighters or tanks, and may include a US fighter squadron stationed in the Middle East if needed.
