Gemini 10 aims for altitude record with Agena boost

New York Harbor Collision Kills 20 Sailors

Two tankers the Alva Cape and the Texaco Massachusetts collided in New York harbor igniting a massive blaze. About 100 men aboard the vessels and escorting tugs, 70 believed to survive with 13 missing, while a survivor recalled flames on the water and a tug exploding during the firestorm near Newark Bay.

Petition Filed Over City Charter Tax Repeal

Ray Middleton filed a petition Thursday with City Clerk Lavenia Lowe to repeal a one half mill City Development tax. Mayor Rogers urged no comment until the measure is presented to the City Council next Thursday. A 16 member Charter Study Committee was named to review the charter with a six month timeline, chaired by Owen McWhorter.

Deluges and hail lash South Plains with tornadoes reported

A strong front spawned tornadoes near Hale Center Olton and near Halfway community northwest of Plainview with open country touchdowns and no injuries. Thunderstorms dumped heavy rain up to two inches, flood guidance issued in Hale County as winds blustered across Olton and surrounding farms.

Titan 3C launches eight satellites into near Earth orbits

The Air Force Titan 3C launched eight satellites in one mission, placing seven communications satellites and a research moonlet into near equatorial orbits between 20,893 and 21,085 miles altitude. The satellites form a global, jam resistant network to connect Washington with bases in Viet Nam and other U.S. forces. All eight spacecraft operated normally after deployment, signaling potential for a robust military communications backbone and future missions including the planned Manned Orbiting Laboratory.

Polite Thug Robbed Bank For 9042 In Caprock Chase

A polite stubble chinned bandit robbed the First State Bank of $9,042 and left with hostage Mrs. Bill Harrison after a 12:57 p.m. stick up. A massive search by car, horse, and air failed to locate him, and he fled toward Caprock country on a fuel‑starved 1966 car.
