Cotton Leak to be Investigated in Senate Hearings
The Justice Department will have a grand jury probe into an alleged leak of secret cotton market information from the Agriculture Department. The inquiry emerged during Senate Agriculture Committee hearings that led to the resignation of Clovis D. Walker as director of the Cotton Branch. Walker denies wrongdoing, saying he resigned to avoid embarrassing the agency. An investigator testified that Louisy Mansour, an Egyptian cotton trader and Walker's close associate, obtained advance information on government buying plans and allegedly sold about 37 million dollars of cotton under the military stockpiling program.
