Sheep heart transplant ends in death in Iowa man
A 41 year old man, Willoughby of Waterloo Iowa, died in Houston after surgeons transplanted the heart of a 125 pound ram into his chest to maintain circulation until a human donor was available. His wife and Des Moines sister recalled his illness and refusal of further options. The operation, performed by a team doing four human heart transplants last month, followed the rare but not first precedent of a animal to human heart graft.
