The Rev. Ralph Abernathy says Earl Ray's prison escape was an official plan to destroy or silence Ray who holds information about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. Ray, serving 99 years after pleading guilty, has disputed pulling the trigger as House investigators press him for details. State leaders react with concern while Coretta Scott King and others could not comment.
Connie Mendez 19 gave birth to a girl named Bernice in her sister-in-law’s bedroom after a hospital refused admission over cost concerns. An EMS crew assisted. mother and baby are reported to be doing fine at a later hospital. A nurse cited a $350 doctor fee and a $280 deposit as the reason for denial, prompting questions about access to care.
In Silverton two fathers in Briscoe County will receive five dollar beef gift certificates from the Terra Cotta Cow Belief. Registration for the certificates occurs at Stan's Grocery and Nance's Food Store with a drawing on June 18.
George MacMillan author of The Making of an Assassin says Ray escaped Brushy Mountain Prison without outside help. He cites prison comrades as the only conspirators and doubts CIA or agency involvement, noting Ray would only implicate others to win freedom. He has spoken with prison officials and others connected to the King assassination case.
