Pope John XXIII dies as world mourns loudly

The 81 year old pope died at 7 49 p m after a four day struggle with illness. Vatican officials and family were at his side as bells tolled in Rome and around the globe. President Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev expressed condolences and praise for his efforts toward peace and unity.

Pilot Dies In Area Crash Near Spur

A Lehman Flying Service pilot Jerry Pettijohn 36 of Frederick Oklahoma died when his Piper spray plane crashed on takeoff from M M Edwards ranch six miles northeast of Spur. The aircraft flipped onto its back in a wheat field after the right wing dug in. Pettijohn had been spraying mesquite in the area for about three days and died shortly after being freed from the wreckage.

Three Negroes Register at Texas A&M in Historic Step

Three African American students registered at Texas A&M College in College Station marking the first such admissions. Alaska DC-7 Missing In Gulf Of Alaska Search Hampered

A Northwest Orient Airlines DC-7 with 101 aboard disappeared over the Gulf of Alaska. Debris seen by a Royal Canadian Air Force plane, but no positive identification. Heavy seas and winds hindered the search as weather limited air and sea assets. The craft carried 95 servicemen and dependents from McChord AFB to Elmendorf Field. No survivors were reported.
