Four Die In Wreckage Of NM Plane Near Clines Corners

An Albuquerque pilot located the almost intact single engine plane wreckage one mile east of Clines Corners New Mexico. All four aboard were killed including Gerald Miles and his wife, Al Lindsey of Albuquerque and Harry Ingman of Lubbock. The crash site was found after a tip from a motorist, hindering earlier searches due to thick brush and bad weather.

Pope John XXIII In Slow Death At Vatican City

Pope John XXIII, aged 81, slipped toward death on the fourth day of his suffering at the Vatican. Crowds of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square as Vatican officials reported his slow decline and doctors said his strength resisted death for now amid prayers in many languages.

Three Held In Breakin

Three people were jailed in Lubbock on Sunday as suspects in a Santa Fe Railway Co. box car burglary earlier that day. A 21 year old man was caught with seven beer cans in a belt by agent J A Greene during the break in and fled with another man who was later found not to be involved. A 51 year old woman and a second 21 year old man were also detained, with the woman held for investigation of receiving and concealing stolen property.

Crop Loss Heavy In Hale Sections

Severe storms spawned at least seven tornadoes across the Hale Center and Hale County area with damaging hail and heavy rains. Five tornadoes were confirmed by the Department of Public Safety as locals in Hale Center and Lockney sought shelter and assessed crop losses across about 100 square miles. No injuries were reported by midnight.

Heavy Rain Expected to End Plains Floods After Week

The South Plains faced torrential rain from Thursday through Sunday as a cold high pressure system lingered from Canada. Rain totals reached about 10 inches with hail and tornadoes. By Sunday the high shifted eastward, forecast to diminish its grip and bring clearing, while a stationary front nears the region.

Blaze at Atlas missile site in Roswell continues

The Atlas missile site near Roswell remains ablaze after an explosion on Saturday. No nuclear warhead was at the site, and the crew escaped unharmed. The missile inside a 175 foot silo was destroyed as flames fed by ruptured oxygen and fuel tanks raged at the base.

Flood Victim Jearrel Crowson Body Found Near Tahoka

The body of 23 year old Jearrel Crowson was found in about four feet of water on submerged Farm Road 400 between Tahoka and Wilson. Crowson, last seen Friday evening, left his home for Tahoka. his car was later found nearly submerged. Lynn County authorities report the body located by a wading boy, and the car pulled from the water Saturday morning. Crowson’s funeral will be held Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Wilson with burial in Eaglewood Cemetery. He is survived by his parents, a brother, three sisters, and grandparents.

Astronauts Train For Jungle Survival In Panama

America’s 16 astronauts traveled to Albrook Air Force Base in the Canal Zone for four days of jungle survival training. They will practice solo navigation in three groups under instructor supervision and may learn to eat iguana, monkeys, and jungle insects as part of the field course. They previously completed water survival and desert training.

Man Killed in West Odessa Two Car Collision

Kenneth Wayne Butler 24, attached to the U S Navy and Marine Corps Training Center in Lubbock, died in a rear end crash on U S Highway 80 four miles west of Odessa at 12 40 a m Sunday. The car he drove overturned twice and he was thrown beneath it. Injured were Mrs Stormy Allen Bruckner 23 of Valdosta Georgia her 20 year old husband and a passenger Thomas Iwao Fujikawa Air Force from New York City. They were treated and released at Medical Center Hospital. Butler lived at 4708 37th Street Lubbock and was a Sharpsville Indiana native. Funeral arrangements were pending Sunday night at Ricks Funeral Home in Odessa.

Yacht Morning Star Sinks After Mayday Call

The yacht Morning Star radioed the Coast Guard that it was sinking fast with five aboard about 250 miles northeast of Nassau. A rescue plane found no sign of the vessel or survivors, and later reports indicated the yacht was not at its reported position, leaving the fate of the five aboard unknown.

United Press International reports a Memorial Day four day period yielding more than 500 traffic fatalities nearing the 1961 record of 462.
