Nixon's Florida trip stalled by tropical storm winds
Former Vice President Richard Nixon's presidential campaign was disrupted as a tropical storm prevented his departure from Miami. He had chartered two planes to transport a large press corps and aides to Walkers Cay in the Bahamas to discuss strategy, but torrential rain and 35 mph winds stranded the group on a small island northeast of Miami. The storm followed a May of record rainfall in southern Florida and raised flood fears. In Cuba, medical teams were dispatched to Pinar del Rio Province after the storm. No casualty figures were reported.
