Torrential rains hit Lubbock area causing minor floods

Torrential rains doused Lubbock and a wide South Plains belt late Sunday. Portions of Lubbock saw up to 1 inch of rain in about an hour. The storm knocked out police radios and several telephones at a Municipal Power and Light building, with water reaching street level at 4th Street and College Avenue but no major damage reported.

Savings on Canadian River dam cut cost by 14 million

Interior Department figures show the Sanford Dam and Canadian River reclamation project costs reduced from 96 million to about 82 million by savings on construction. The $4 million comes from electric motor pumps replacing gas driven ones, with the rest from lower overall construction costs. The contract with the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority plans for up to 92 million plus interest over 50 years, funded by water sales to 11 Panhandle and South Plains cities.

Floods Kill 11 Across Colorado Tennessee And Kentucky

Heavy weekend rains caused flash floods in eastern Tennessee and southeast Kentucky claiming eight lives, including five from one family, while Colorado losses rose to three dead. In Colorado Springs area three children drowned as a flood stalled vehicles and flooded basements, with a 13 month old missing. A missing teenager was reported and an empty car with California plates was found near Denver. North American Air Defense Command tunnel near Colorado Springs flooded trapping eight military personnel.

Namu the Killer Whale Heads for Seattle Aquarium

Namu the killer whale, about 29 feet long, is being moved by tug toward a Seattle waterfront aquarium. The voyage through Haro Strait could reach Seattle Tuesday if weather and machinery cooperate. The whale’s capture began June 23 near Namu in British Columbia when a net snagged on a rock and only one of two entangled whales remained. See WHALE SAGA Page 8.

Woman Dies of Wounds in El Reno Club Shooting

Sara Varges died at Methodist Hospital at 11 20 p m after four bullet wounds from a shooting outside the El Reno Club on East 19th Street near Lubbock. Sabino Cantu, 32, was shot in the lower abdomen and underwent surgery as deputies and Justice of the Peace George McCleskey pursued witnesses at the hospital.
